Woodland Management in Hampshire

Hampshire has a rich woodland heritage β€” from ancient semi-natural oak and hazel coppice in the chalk valleys to estate plantations and post-war conifer blocks. Woodland that is actively managed is both more productive and more ecologically valuable than woodland left entirely to its own devices.

We work with private landowners on practical, achievable management programmes β€” not theoretical plans that never get implemented. We’re realistic about what can be achieved with typical woodland budgets and we prioritise the work that delivers the most value.

Hampshire’s woodland is also increasingly affected by ash dieback, which is requiring many landowners to make difficult decisions about ash removal and woodland restructuring. We have direct experience of ash dieback management in both garden and woodland settings across the county.

What We Can Help With

Practical, hands-on woodland work β€” not consultancy reports. We visit, assess, advise and carry out the work.

πŸͺ“

Thinning

Selective removal of trees to release the best stems, improve crown development and increase light to the woodland floor. We agree a thinning specification before work begins and mark trees for removal.

🌿

Coppice Management

Rotational coppicing of hazel, ash and sweet chestnut. Includes ride-edge coppicing to improve light and diversity. See our coppicing page for full detail.

πŸ›€οΈ

Ride Cutting

Clearance and maintenance of woodland rides and paths. Improves access, creates edge habitat and increases light levels. Bramble clearing and scrub control included where required.

⚠️

Ash Dieback Management

Assessment and safe removal of ash trees affected by Chalara dieback β€” the primary management issue in Hampshire woodland right now. See our ash dieback page.

πŸ¦‡

Veteran & Habitat Tree Retention

Identifying and protecting veteran trees, standing deadwood and habitat features during management operations. Wildlife survey support available where bat roosts or dormice are a concern.

🌱

Restocking & Planting

Replacing felled trees with appropriate species for the site β€” matching the planting to the soil, existing woodland character and management objectives. See our tree planting page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Felling licences are issued by the Forestry Commission and are required for most commercial felling operations over a certain volume. However, there are exemptions β€” trees under a certain diameter, trees in gardens, and trees already covered by planning permission or an approved woodland management plan. We advise you on what applies to your site before any felling begins.

Most active management β€” thinning, coppicing and felling β€” is best done in autumn and winter (October to February) when trees are dormant and ground conditions allow machinery access without excessive damage to root systems. Ride management and scrub clearance can be done outside bird nesting season (September–February). We plan programmes around these windows and your access arrangements.

Yes. Depending on species and size, thinnings can be processed as firewood (which can offset the cost of the operation), chipped on site, or removed as roundwood. We discuss the options with you before work begins. In some cases, particularly with sweet chestnut or oak, timber may have commercial value depending on quality and market conditions at the time.

We are familiar with the requirements of Countryside Stewardship woodland options and can carry out work to the specifications required. If you’re in a CS agreement or applying for one, let us know and we’ll work to the relevant standard. We can also provide written records of operations carried out for scheme reporting purposes.

Let’s Talk About Your Woodland

We’ll visit, walk the site with you, and give you an honest assessment of what the woodland needs and what a realistic programme of work looks like.
