What’s a TPO, and do I need permission?
A Tree Preservation Order (TPO) is made by a local council to protect specific trees, groups of trees, or woodlands. If your tree is covered by a TPO โ or stands within a Conservation Area โ you’ll usually need written consent before carrying out work such as:
- Pruning, crown reduction or thinning
- Crown lifting
- Removing deadwood (in some cases)
- Felling or removal
Not sure where you stand? A tree health survey is a great starting point โ it gives us the information we need to put together a strong application.
TPO questions, answered
It’s a legal order made by a local council to protect a tree, group of trees, or woodland โ restricting works such as felling, topping, lopping or uprooting without consent.
We can check this for you as part of our free assessment โ councils hold a register of protected trees and Conservation Areas.
Councils typically aim to decide TPO applications within around eight weeks, though times vary โ we’ll keep you updated throughout.
You’ll usually still need to give the council notice before work on trees above a certain size โ we handle this notification too.
Carrying out unauthorised work on a protected tree is a criminal offence and can result in significant fines โ it’s always worth checking first.
