What’s a TPO, and do I need permission?
A Tree Preservation Order (TPO) is made by a local council to protect specific trees, groups of trees, or woodlands. If your tree is covered by a TPO — or stands within a Conservation Area — you’ll usually need written consent before carrying out work such as:
- Pruning, crown reduction or thinning
- Crown lifting
- Removing deadwood (in some cases)
- Felling or removal

It’s a legal order made by a local council to protect a tree, group of trees, or woodland — restricting works such as felling, topping, lopping or uprooting without consent.

If you want to work on a tree with a trunk diameter above 75mm in a Conservation Area, you must give the council six weeks’ prior notice under Section 211 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990. This gives the council time to make a TPO if it wishes. We handle this notification for you — no need to worry about the paperwork.
